Texas pitcher Jared Southard throws in the third inning against Texas A&M during an NCAA College World Series baseball game Sunday, June 19, 2022, in Omaha, Neb. AUSTIN - Sean Allen and David Pierce have been attached at the hip for the past decade.
In a surprising development, their professional relationship came to an end this week. Late Monday night Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.com reported Texas had dismissed Allen in the wake of the team’s poor showing at the Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Neb., and a team source later corroborated the report to the Express-News.
Evidently, Texas didn’t think it could break through the final barrier with Allen. It’s a gamble on Pierce’s part, one he felt compelled to make after the pitching staff regressed some in 2022. Still, Texas’ arms, both the starters and relievers, proved too combustible this season. Even the most prolific slugging offense in school history couldn’t save the Longhorns from eventually succumbing to the season-long loss of weekend starter Tanner Witt, a freshman All-American last season, or the puzzling declines of sixth-year senior Tristan Stevens and sophomore closer Aaron Nixon.
Texas allowed three or more runs in a single inning in four of its final five games. ECU put together innings of three, three and five runs to win Game 1 of the Greenville Super Regional. And Notre Dame and Texas A&M generated 21 hits and 17 runs off eight Texas pitchers in the MCWS, games in which starters Hansen and Gordon struggled with their command.
