A new study found a higher rate of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis for children born in the summer
Children born in July and August are more likely to be diagnosed with – or have medication for – ADHD than kids born in September and October, says a new study. It found that by the age of 15 those born in July and August were around 40% more likely to have a prescription for, or be diagnosed, with ADHD.
'We’ve seen this disparity in previous research in other countries, so we expected to see something similar here,' she said. 'What we really need to understand is what causes such a disparity.' They said that most children in England start school in the September after their fourth birthday. This means there can be almost a year’s difference in age between those born in July and August and those born in September or October.
But co-author Dr Catia Nicodemo, from the University of Oxford, said the difference can disappear as children get older:
