China kicked off celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule with a grand military parade
Chinese President Xi Jinping waves next to former president Jiang Zemin during a military parade inChina kicked off celebrations Tuesday morning to mark the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule with a grand military parade, as the nation’s leaders seek to demonstrate its rapid rise as a global power.
"We will maintain long term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macau, advance the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, unite the whole country, and continue to strive toward the complete unification of our country,” he said. The parade included each of China’s air, land and naval forces showcasing many of the country’s most advanced weapons such as stealth aircraft and new hypersonic missiles. One of the more notable displays was the Dongfeng-41 intercontinental ballistic missile, which according to Chinese experts can strike anywhere in the world
The celebration comes at a time when China is also confronted with some formidable challenges. Although it has risen to become the world’s second-largest economy, growth has slowed recently as it engages in a tit-for-tat trade fight with the U.S. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s anti-government protests continue to show no sign of letting up after dragging on for months already.
