In a new interview, Courtney Stodden revisited the vicious online abuse she suffered as a 16-year-old from Teigen and other celebrities after marrying 50-year-old actor Doug Hutchison.
Stodden said on Cooper’s podcast that the most persistent hatred came from Teigen, who privately messaged them “for a really long time,” sometimes as late as 2 a.m.
In the wake of the 2021 documentary, “Framing Britney Spears,” which examined the media’s mistreatment of the pop superstar in the 2000s, one writer said it was time to reassess Stodden’s plight because of the way the media and viewers “turned child-abuse into a sleazy spectacle,” the Daily Beast reported in an interview Stodden in May 2021.
“People came out of the woodwork to beat up on a kid because she was in a situation that she shouldn’t have been in,” Stodden added to the Daily Beast. “There were a lot of celebrities acting like playground bullies. Some of the worst treatment I got was from women, and we’re not going to get anywhere if we keep holding each other back.”
Crisis management experts said that Teigen committed one of the cardinal sins in American celebrity: She got caught positioning herself as one thing publicly, when the opposite was true privately. Despite her sometimes brash and controversial way of expressing herself, Teigen presented herself as authentic and good-hearted and fashioned herself into an arbiter of compassion, moral behavior and progressive politics.
