Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie predicted the date for former President Donald Trump's trial regarding his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election will be"disastrous" for the Republican Party.
Christie warned that the trial, which will begin jury selection on March 4, will mean Trump is spending a lot of time in court rather than on the campaign trail during a pivotal time in the election cycle. The trial is now scheduled to begin the day before Super Tuesday.
Christie, who is also running for the GOP nomination, added that Trump is not fit to be the party's nominee because of his"personal conduct" and alleged crimes. But Christie admitted the March 4 date is"realistic" and observed that special counsel Jack Smith likely charged Trump alone so the case would go to trial faster.
District Judge Tanya Chutkan selected the trial date on Monday after Smith’s team asked for a Jan. 2, 2024, trial date and Trump’s team recommended the trial start in April 2026. The case is just one of four against the former president, who is also the current front-runner for the GOP nomination.Trump pleaded not guilty on Aug. 3 to four federal felony charges over Smith's accusations that he engaged in a scheme to overturn the 2020 election, which resulted in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
He has also been indicted in New York and Georgia and has been indicted on 40 felony charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after he left the Oval Office. Trump has maintained his innocence in each case.
