But if you’ve noticed a distinct lack of festive cheer this year, then you are not alone. Advert experts – by which I mean industry experts, not people who watch a lot of telly – report that something has changed. Christmas adverts normally celebrate indulgence, says Graeme Noble, but this year, “it’s more: ‘Let’s make it a nice Christmas, let’s make it a warm Christmas.’ There’s more of that sentiment than promising the best Christmas ever.
“If somebody gets the tone wrong, if someone is too flash, or promises too much, they’ll stand out a lot more.” Why have Christmas ads adopted this downbeat tone? Across the industry, the answer is the same. “In tough economic times,” says Martin Beverley, who is chief strategy officer at the agency behind the John Lewis ad, “it is important that advertisers read the room, and depict more understated celebrations, which some brands have demonstrated.”
