The Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan finally sets the record straight on Josh Hartnett's casting involvement with Batman Begins.

Christopher Nolan is finally opening up on the casting process for Batman Begins and what actually happened to Josh Hartnett. One of the best depictions of Batman in live-action was through Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, which began in 2005 with Batman Begins, featuring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader. The three-part film series took a grounded approach with Batman during a time when comic book movies weren't where they are today.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While Bale was picked by Nolan, the filmmaker was looking at other potential candidates, with Hartnett being one of them. Almost two decades later, Nolan is clarifying how far they got with Hartnett during the Batman Begins casting process as he disclosed what actually happened during an interview with Indiewire. It turns out that they had only had a conversation about it rather than actually getting to the audition or screentest stage.

I met with Josh and if I recall, he was a young actor whose work I was very interested in. It never got that far…I had an initial conversation with him, but he had read my brother’s script for ‘The Prestige’ at the time and was more interested in getting involved with that. So it never went further than that.

Nolan has also elaborated over the years on why Bale was the right man for the job when developing Batman Begins. When Bale was cast in 2003, Nolan said that it was the actor's screentest while wearing Val Kilmer's Batman suit that won the director over, as he had the "balance of darkness and light that we were looking for." To this day, Bale continues to be one of the most favored Batman actors in live-action when it comes to the DC hero's cinematic legacy.

Given how many have played Batman at this point, it will be interesting to see who gets tapped next with DC Studios currently developing their new DC Universe, which includes Batman: The Brave and The Bold as one of their big films. It would be fun if Bale somehow appears even in a minor role since he did play Batman for nearly a decade. While Bale may be done with the Caped Crusader, fans can relive Batman Begins and the rest of Nolan's trilogy on home media or streaming.
