Holidaymakers could be turned away at the airport for not following strict passport rules

Holidaymakers hoping to go abroad this year have been warned to check their passports or risk being sent home. Travel rules for travelling within the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, or Liechtenstein mean that you could be turned away from the border even if you're passport is technically still in date.

However, you should leave yourself plenty of time to renew your passport as it can take a few weeks for it to be processed in time, especially with the increase in people going abroad during the summer holidays. If you have no choice and need it done quickly, you can otherwise get it fast-tracked through GOV.UK but it will cost you extra. If you're concerned that your passport won't be accepted at the border of the country you're going to, you can simply head to GOV.

How to renew your passport You can obtain forms to renew your passport at the Post Office or by making a call to request a form, which will set you back £100. However, it's simpler and more cost-effective to renew online at £88.50. In addition, you'll need an acceptable photograph, a debit or credit card and your old passport if it's available. The process is straightforward but ensuring your details are accurate is crucial to avoid any delays.

The regulations surrounding photos have become stricter and it needs to be in digital format for the application. However, you can't just pick a photo from Instagram as the traditional rules still apply.Your best bet is to visit a photo booth or have your photograph taken in a shop, which typically costs around £10 - £15. You will receive a code to download your passport compliant photograph directly onto the form.
