David Mellen says people are 'not living in the real world' if they think enough savings will be made without closing libraries
The closure of some of Nottingham's libraries is now expected as the city council continues to battle a financial crisis. The council's leader says people are "not living in the real world" if they think enough savings will be made without closing facilities.
Given the reluctance of elected councillors to back the "savage" cuts, they are therefore taking legal advice on what would happen if they refuse to approve the budget at their final say on the matter. The review of libraries is one of dozens of budget proposals developed by council officers that do not have the support of the Labour councillors controlling Nottingham.
"Those are not your libraries, they're not your community facilities. Those are assets belonging to the people of Nottingham, they are buildings and services that carry the weight of their history. The great women and men of Nottingham that built them, the generations of people that used them and those who use them still."
