The design, demolition and construction for the project will cost around $300 million
) -For years, city leaders have considered the fate of the 60-year-old Mobile Civic Center. Now Mayor Sandy Stimpson says we finally have a clear path forward. With a lot of fanfare, the mayor announced that the civic center as we know it will soon be torn down and replaced with something the city has needed for a while.
City leaders had long debated whether it was best to renovate the existing structure or tear it down and start over. Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne says over the last decade the civic center has lost around $18 million. Renovations were projected cost around $242 million while demolition was projected just under $300 million but he says the longevity of the new civic center would be worth it.
The new civic center arena will feature luxury suites, a new open concourse, and new accommodations for Mardi Gras balls including a 5,000-7500-guest capacity and access to the ballrooms, seating bowl and the main event floor. and will include building the new arena and the prep work for the rest of the master plan which Byrne says could bring in $1 billion worth of investments.
