Education boss Jonathan Jones confirmed the Department for Education was assessing four Liverpool sites

A number of schools in Liverpool are being assessed by education chiefs amid the ongoing crisis around concrete in public buildings.

It emerged last week that around 100 schools throughout the UK would be ordered to close their doors on the eve of the new school term after concerns arose regarding aerated concrete used in construction that is liable to sudden collapse.Mr Jones confirmed the four unnamed schools in the city were now being investigated for the presence of autoclaved aerated concrete but said this did not guarantee any would be found.

Mr Jones told the city council’s education, skills and employment scrutiny committee last night a questionnaire was sent to the Cunard Building by the DfE in 2020 regarding the state of schools in the city. He said he was only aware of information that had been made available publicly and was “not privy” to any further details regarding the structural integrity of schools.

Earlier this week, city council officials and local authority representatives from across the Liverpool City Region said there was no RAAC found in any council managed schools following an investigation across the respective boroughs. Department for Education data indicated 52 locations across the UK currently have mitigations in place following the identification of RAAC, with 104 requiring urgent works.
