While higher education remains a critical driver of social and economic mobility, new admits must now commit—and succeed—without the supportive in-person experience that schools typically provide.
In the coming months, the virus is likely to exacerbate one of the most persistent challenges faced by colleges and their students each year: summer melt. Researchthat up to 40 percent of admitted college students never make it to the first day of class, often due to the complexities of navigating the enrollment process. Complicated paperwork requirements and lack of clarity around deadlines can often create unintended barriers to students' college-going aspirations.
Today, we’re thrilled to join forces with CommonApp to use similar AI tools to help incoming college students from low-income families, or who are the first in their families to go to college, navigate their path to enrollment. Our new program, launched earlier this month, will proactively communicate with students all summer to bridge the gap to the fall semester.
But perhaps the most important—and impactful—role that this partnership can play for students and institutions goes beyond just enrollment. In addition to answering questions and nudging students toward the behaviors that lead to success, the combination of AI and personalized mentorship can be a powerful tool forthat"personal finances" are the most common reason people cite when dropping out of college.
