On the one-year anniversary of August 3rd—a day that forever altered my hometown of El Paso, Texas—the immense pain can still be felt. That morning, in 2019, a white man drove more than 11 hours through Texas to kill Hispanics at an El Paso Walmart.
. It’s worth noting that Latinos are often undercounted in criminal-justice data since many states report race but not ethnicity. Adding to these injustices is a lack of answers and action from the military for the murder of 20-year-old U.S. Army soldier, Vanessa Guillen, who had reported sexual harassment to her family and friends and was later found dismembered near Fort Hood, more than two months after she went missing.in 2019, about 18 percent of the U.S.
burdened with crisis upon crisis, a community in suffering, living in an America that disregards its existence. From the media that largely leaves Latinx voices out of conversations around racism and police brutality to the blatantly racist Trump administration thatto separate families at the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso, has yet to appoint a Spanish-speaking official to address the more than 40 million Americans who speak Spanish, and just recently made the shameless decision to halt new DACA applications, our suffering is continuous and immense.
Sadly, many communities of color understand this suffering all too well. I am grateful to the activists, especially those within the Brown and Black communities, who have done important work bringing attention to these disparities and this violence.
