Trump’s grievances – over his impeachments, the contempt shown for him by Democrats and GOP grandees, and over his election loss – stoke his thirst to return to power and the ability he thinks this will give him to enact revenge 🔎 Analysis from ...

If the name Burisma rings a bell, that’s because this energy company was at the centre of Trump’s first impeachment. Trump intimated to Ukrainian president Volodymr Zelensky’s government that the US would withhold aid worth $390m, unless authorities announced an investigation into his opponent Biden, as Trump looked for evidence to back his claims that Biden tried to block a corruption investigation into the company to conceal his son’s activities.

After the midterm elections returned the GOP to a majority in the House of Representatives, James Comer, the incoming Republican Oversight Committee chairman, said an investigation into the Biden family would be a priority, to determine whether the Bidens’ business activities “compromise US national security and President Biden’s ability to lead with impartiality.”

The right’s focus on the Bidens – and on Hunter Biden in particular – is likely to continue, as the Trump campaign seeks to suggest that a double standard is at play, with Trump targeted by the Justice Department, while others – Joe Biden, Mike Pence and Hillary Clinton – are not prosecuted, despite evidence that they have improperly used classified information.

If Trump had simply complied with the request and returned the papers, as Pence and Biden did as soon as it became apparent they had kept papers that belonged to the government – then he would not have been in court this week. Trump made his legal situation far worse, prosecutors say, by lying about the documents he had, hiding some and getting others to aid him in deceiving the authorities.
