EXCLUSIVE: Claire Richards is still enjoying a successful career after 25 years in iconic British pop band Steps - and is ready to share her secret crush from the 90s
Claire Richards is best known as one fifth of the band Steps, the pop superstars who are still topping the charts after 26 years, having sold more than 22 million records worldwide.
“The last time I saw Peter properly was in the 90s. He won’t remember this, but we were all on a Smash Hits tour and staying in the same hotel. I was in love with Peter, I really was,” she says smiling. “He was my secret crush. But he was a few years older than me, so he probably thought I was just a kid."
Fellow 90s pop stars, S Club, are also about to reunite after the sudden death of band member Paul Cattermole in April, aged just 46. Claire tells us she was shocked and heartbroken by the loss of the singer. Following the first break-up of Steps, Claire forged a successful solo career. In 2019, she played to her biggest live audience ever when she supported Celine Dion at London’s Hyde Park.“I think Steps was part of a very special time in music in the late 1990s. We quickly carved out a place in the market, which I don’t think you could do now – not with the whole streaming thing. I have so many fond memories of travelling the world.
Claire was a teenager in 1997 when she first auditioned to become a member of Steps. She recalls the moment she was told to lose weight and admits it led to an eating disorder that has plagued her life. The singer, who adds that she has been both dangerously thin and obese, says there is a lack of understanding around the issue but that she’s learnt to strike a happier balance.
