For years, entities responsible for polluting groundwater in Tucson have worked with government agencies to clean and treat the site.
After last month’s unanimous vote to allow American Battery Factory to build a giga-factory south of Tucson, experts applauded the benefits of such a large venture for the county. One official, however, questioned potential environmental impacts on a community marred by decades of pollution.
The only concern was addressed by Supervisor Adelita Grijalva who questioned American Battery Factory CEO Paul Charles about the environmental impacts the production could have on the surrounding area, primarily of what the source will be of the 150,000 daily gallons of water needed for production and where wastewater will be disbursed.
Charles said everything the company produces will be recycled or sent off-site, so there will be no disbursement into groundwater other than the average sewage waste.American Battery Factory did not respond to questions about where materials would be sent off-site. For years, the entities responsible for polluting the water have worked with government agencies to clean and treat the site, efforts that continue to this day, according to the EPA. The agency listed the site on the Superfund National Priority List in 1983.
Susan Dumon is the senior vice president of economic competitiveness for Sun Corridor Inc., an economic development organization that helps bring base industries to Tucson. She said attracting such a large company to the area will have positive long-term effects in the community. Tucson is “a really attractive place for people to visit,” Dumon said, adding that once they visit Tucson, they like it and start considering it as a suitable place to do business.
For manufacturing companies, the recent opening of Pima Community College’s Center of Excellence in Applied Technology has also given Tucson a competitive edge, she noted.
