Westminster can be a tricky place for young women starting out in their careers... there is alcohol at many social and professional functions, and power and patronage haunts almost any interaction with a boss, colleague, or journalist ✒️ Cleo Watson
Many women I spoke to stressed the importance of exercising a #notallmen approach in these male-dominated environments. But how do you spot the problematic ones? A simple and foolproof test, in my former government colleague’s view, is how a man talks about the different women in his life. You can rely on someone who “talks respectfully and kindly” about their partner/mother/friends.
Sadly, even in 2023, many of the same depressing assumptions that the successful women in a competitive environment have had innuendo-heavy “help” in getting ahead persist, but there are ways to deal with this kind of mean-spirited jealousy. My former government colleague advised a different approach: “Enjoy the difference. You will have perspectives that they don’t. Being in a minority can be a superpower – find your space.”
