The 15th pick in 2008 out of Stanford, Cleveland will be the ninth franchise for Lopez during his career. The Cavs entered this offseason with a roster crunch. They currently have 11 players under contract for 2022-23 -- and will soon sign first-round pick Ochai Agbaji to his rookie deal. The contracts for Rubio and Lopez -- agreed-to deals that will become official next week -- make 14, one below the maximum. The Cavs are also hoping to bring back restricted free agent Collin Sexton -- a move that would fill the roster.
While other holes could be created, especially if the Rubio agreement gets turned into a sign-and-trade with Indiana, Cleveland reserved those two open roster spots for backups at point guard and center. The front office filled both on Day 2 of free agency, but will continue to keep options open for more maneuvering.
