Now conference is over, the Tories have to come out of their shells and face reality
Tory leadership candidates, Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick , James Cleverly and Tom Tugendhat, stand together on stage after delivering their speeches during the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham.
“Jenrick for Leader” badges could be spotted on every other activist, and a surprise appearance he made at a fringe I was at led to such loud cries of “Hear! Hear!” that my fight-or-flight response was briefly triggered. Having watched the speeches the candidates gave yesterday, I am still ready to predict that he will make the final two, but am doing so slightly less confidently.
Whether there is currently another option is the million-dollar question. Though I am not a betting woman, I would be tempted toIf he were to make it to the final two, it is possible that he could win it. Though he would have a better shot at uniting the party than Jenrick, whose love for off-colour jokes – some of which he couldn’t resist making at conference – may prove to be a problem.
