In August, Harmony Sweetgrass was selected as the first woman from the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation to hold the title in the competition's two decade-long history
When Rancho San Diego resident Harmony Sweetgrass participated in a celebratory bird dance after being announced as this year’s Miss Kumeyaay Nation, it felt like a full circle moment for her family.
But as Elliott grew up and started raising kids of her own, many in the community embarked on a revitalization of Kumeyaay cultural traditions. Sweetgrass is a proud advocate for learning, sharing and participating in all aspects of Kumeyaay community. In July 2022, she started a monthly bird dance practice group called Sycuan Bird Girls along with one of her cousins, and they now get 20 to 30 people who attend each session., where she takes classes in tribal history, culture and language.
The first major event of her reign is an introduction to the community at the Sycuan Tribal Hall on Oct. 6, where her family will host a dinner with bird singing and dancing. Along with her mom, Sweetgrass is creating a Kumeyaay Bingo game for the event, using words from the traditional language in lieu of numbers on the bingo cards.
