Padres teammates were eager to move on and now they can after hearing from Fernando Tatis Jr.
Since the day they’d learned of Fernando Tatis Jr.’s season-ending suspension, his teammates spoke, time and time again of moving on.Of course, closure never hurt anyone.
“That’s not an easy conversation to have,” Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove said. “For him to come in and then face the team face-to-face and be honest with us … I think that’s kind of what everyone wanted. It was some tough love to an extent. Obviously everyone’s got a different perspective on it and different feelings about it all, but … people make mistakes. It’s something that we’re definitely not going to hold over his head for the rest of his career.
It was a conversation that Jurickson Profar had been imploring Tatis to have inside the clubhouse since news first broke. The Padres’ left fielder had been in regular contact with Tatis. He visited his friend Sunday night but did not learn of Tatis’ decision until a group text went out to the team Tuesday.
Added third baseman Manny Machado: “It’s a hard conversation you gotta have and overall it’s just a tough, tough feeling. … It was the first step. I’m glad he did it and now we can put this all behind us. We’ll put it past us and continue to play baseball. He’s going to be cheering for us … and we’re going to be there for him whatever he needs.”
