“She brought me up from a very young age and her influence on all of us can’t be put into words”
A Co Tyrone man is doubling down on his marathon charity efforts from last year as he plans to run more than 100 miles from Donegal to his hometown next month. But Dwayne’s motivation for doing the run this year comes from the joy his 53 mile run from Derry brought his 95-year-old grandmother Joan following the death of her son Dessie to cancer. The Coalisland man said his ‘nanny’ had been transformed following the run last year and wants to give her something to smile about again.
“After our uncle passed away she was in a bad way and very down and said the only thing that brought her out of it was that run. She understandably took the death of her son quite badly and at any age the loss of a child is something so very hard to deal with. “At the age of 95 I want her to have something to feel proud and happy about. No words will ever convey what this woman has done not only for me but for our whole family leading us all to be the people we are today.”
“I’m starting to think to myself that I have maybe bit off a bit more than I can chew this time,” he says.“I’ve been researching it and apparently at that distance there is a high chance of hallucinations and things like that so it’s not going to be easy.”
