Cocaine Bear shows its box office might by conquering Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania on 2 consecutive days at the end of its opening week.
Cocaine Bear is showing off its box office strength by buffeting Marvel's latest release from No. 1 at the end of its opening week. The film, which is loosely based on a true story, follows the violent rampage that ensues in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest when a bear ingests a cocaine shipment that was dumped on nearby Blood Mountain. The film, which was directed by comic actor Elizabeth Banks, features an ensemble that includes Keri Russell, O'Shea Jackson Jr.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Per Deadline, the stellar opening week box office of the drug-fueled Cocaine Bear just closed by taking No. 1 on Thursday, reaching a cumulative domestic total of $30.2 million. Although it didn't snatch No. 1 from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania over the weekend, it did take the top slot on its opening Thursday, a feat it repeated this Wednesday and Thursday.
The film is also a lone original coming in March. Other than the Adam Driver sci-fi vehicle 65, every other major release is a tentpole franchise film. This includes the releases of Creed III, Scream 6, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the former three of which are already projected to have the strongest opening weekends yet for their respective franchises.
However, not all is lost for the original film. Cocaine Bear continues a 2023 horror trend that started with the success of Blumhouse's viral killer doll film M3GAN, which opened the first weekend of January. That film, also an original, continued the genre's streak of hits that took place throughout 2022, showing that there is an appetite for original material even as sequels, reboots, and superhero films from Marvel and DC continue to dominate the marketplace.
