PUBLISHED 12:29 PM CDT Jul. 06, 2022WASHINGTON — Since the news of WNBA star Brittney Griner’s detainment in Russia, Black women across the country have showed their support by organizing petitions and demanding change within the league. And now, more than 1,000 Black women leaders have called upon President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in a letter to secure Griner’s safe return home to those who miss and love her.
“We stand with our sister, Brittney Griner and the more than 270,000 people who have signed the petition urging you to bring Brittney Griner home,” the letter reads. “Like many WNBA athletes, Brittney plays abroad during the WNBA offseason for the love of the sport, but also in exchange for substantially bigger contracts which are not available to women’s basketball players in the [U.S.].
