How else to explain how Sashin, a 24-year-old junior right-hander who walked on four years ago, could find himself on the mound Fridays for the University of San Diego baseball team?He allowed one hit over three shutout innings in a 7-3 season-opening win against Nebraska.
“The command will come,” said Sashin, adding, “My first two starts haven’t gone exactly how I wanted them to go, but I’m still enjoying the process.” “I decided to go somewhere I could enjoy going to school and being a student,” Sashin said, “and then let the sports thing figure itself out once I got settled in.”
“Of course,” said Sashin, who was impressive enough in a bullpen session to earn a summer league assignment. “I was pounding the zone, throwing a lot of strikes,” Sashin said. “My velocity was up. My command was up.”
