N.J. freshmen expected to play key roles as Bluebloods look to bounce back

NJ Advance Media file photosAl McGuire, the Naismith Hall of Fame coach who led Marquette to the 1977 NCAA championship, once famously said of college freshmen, “The best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores.”
Boff, now coaching at College Achieve Prep in Neptune City, said the key thing for all of these players is to carve out a role for themselves on their new teams, where they will generally be surrounded by older players, including transfers., the number of incoming freshmen in Division I men’s basketball fell by 18.2% from the 2019-20 pre-pandemic season to 2021-22 .
“I feel like I never really like to look at it as pressure,” Wagner said. “I’m just having fun out there, doing something that I love to do. But the first goal is just being successful with my team, you know, winning the championship. That type of stuff comes first.” “From an outside perspective, these kids have to battle with the past,” Calipari said in a quote not used by The Athletic. “They deal with past success of this program, from those who have thrived both here and at the next level, but their first fight is with their own self. We as a staff are trying to keep these outside expectations off the kids.”
Already in the preseason, he has made several highlight-reel plays, including a dunk after driving the lane. His play this season will go a long way in determining how far the No. 19 Tar Heels can go after missing last year’s Big Dance. He also flipped from one Tobacco Road school, choosing to ask out of his Letter of Intent at Duke before landing with Mike Woodson at Indiana.
