A dozen Columbus establishments could lose state liquor licenses after city objected to the state over renewing their licenses.

It was around 2:30 a.m. on Labor Day when 32-year-old Gregory Coleman Jr., who was eating on the sidewalk patio outside the Julep Bar while talking to some women, got into an altercation with a man.. He went into a coma and died 13 days later on Sept. 18.

"Julep is simply a bad neighbor," said Donald Halpern, who lives across the street. He said the establishment is frequented by young people — including some who he contended appear to be underaged — creating noise, fighting, public consumption, public urination, littering, and the discharging of firearms.

Besides Julep, the city council is also raising objections with the state over these establishments that sell alcohol: Beechcroft Newsstand, located at 1935 East Dublin Granville Road; Doll House & Patio, 1680 Karl Court; Mobile Mart, 2635 West Broad St.; Platform Lounge, 1058 Country Club Road; Queen of Hearts and Pelican Club, 5512 East Livingston Ave.; Spotlight Lounge, 1662 West Mound St.; Speedway stations at 6175 East Livingston Ave. and 3304 E. Broad St.

Keith Norman, head of security at Julep, told the council it's hard for the city to place blame on just one of the numerous liquor establishments in the Short North.
