Ernie Cowan's Outdoors column
Like a dancing splash of sunlight, the bright yellow sulphur butterfly darted from plant to plant, reminding me that spring is just around the corner.
Last week, more than 100 migrating Swainson’s hawks roosted in Borrego Springs, something not usually seen until March. Take a backcountry drive and carpeted green hills look more like the spring highlands of Scotland than our typically brown chaparral forests.Nature is happy and spring is preparing to arrive with a dramatic flourish this year. This is a great time to prepare for the arrival of our seasonal feathered friends.
The arrival each spring of iridescent yellow and jet-black orioles is like a family homecoming for me. Their comical antics, bickering and nervous behavior is such a joy to watch until they depart in September. For each of the past seven years, we have had seven eggs, and all were successfully hatched and fledged except for one year of drama when another wren male attempted to raid the nest and toss the chicks out.
