Patients’ EPO doses, which were reimbursed by Medicare prior to 2011, soared at dialysis centers after their acquisition by for-profit chains. That was a “reflection of worse care,” the study says, “because transplants provide both a better quality of life and a longer life expectancy than dialysis.”
