From Ted Slowik: 'Chicago needs to figure out a way to return the Columbus statue to Grant Park in a way that acknowledges that our understanding of history has evolved to incorporate multiple views.'
Crews remove the Christopher Columbus statue in Chicago's Grant Park in the early hours July 24, 2020.
It turns out there were already people living in places Columbus discovered. Native Americans and others shared an alternate experience, one that involved the pain and horror of genocide. That helps explain how statues of Columbus became targets of demonstrators all over the United States who protested the police-involved murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis during the summer of 2020.
“A commitment was made that they were going to be taken down temporarily for the safety and security of law enforcement,” DeLuca said. All over America, citizens and government officials have been debating statues in public spaces for many years. Floyd’s murder triggered waves of racially charged protests.
Needless to say, the group’s recommendations were met with skepticism. Should the city devote human public safety resources to protecting an inanimate object when gun violence and other serious crimes affect the lives of so many Chicagoans every day? Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans President Ron Onesti speaks about his hopes for restoring a statue of Christopher Columbus in Grant Park after the Columbus Day parade along South State Street Oct. 11, 2021, in downtown Chicago.
