In Opinion: For a people concerned about stolen elections, voting rights, insurrection, voter suppression and democracy’s future, we certainly didn’t show much concern about those issues in the June 28 primary elections. Most didn’t care enough to vote.

We’re not alone in voting deficiency just before marking our July 4 national birth 246 years ago. Other states holding primaries last week had similar results.

We were always told holding primary elections in blustery, rainy and cold March discouraged voters from making the effort to trudge to their polling places. No excuse for the lackluster turnout on June 28, which was a lovely summer day. Apparently it wasn’t enough to entice voters to choose a Democrat or Republican ballot. In the Warren High vote, one could merely ask for the nonpartisan referendum ballot and didn’t have to declare a party choice. Usually, voter participation dips in midterm primaries, yet this primary showed a steep drop.

The same percentage of Chicagoans voted last Tuesday. It is the lowest rates for the city since 2014, when less than 17% voted.Which means most of candidates on the Nov. 8 general election ballot will have gotten there by being chosen by one of the smallest electorate or being uncontested in the primary. Talk about a minority ruling the eventual outcome of our elections.
