Free admission for practice — and big-screen view of Aztecs game — fails to draw a crowd
I witnessed March Madness — real madness — 35 years ago when USD played in the 1987 NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
One could argue that so many turned out in Indiana four decades ago because the Hoosiers were part of the regional. To this point, the loudest cheers of the day came when Seton Hall completed its sessions with half-court shots. A three-pointer by Chad Baker-Mazara that made it 26-15 with 7 1/2 minutes left generated a hearty “Ohhhh!” from the crowd.A dunk by Keshad Johnson that made 41-34 with 12:40 remaining in the second half.Oddly, Notre Dame wore blue and white jerseys. Maybe the Irish were saving their greens for a late-evening St. Patrick’s Day pub crawl.
The fans pivoted accordingly, cheering on Saint Peter’s overtime upset while trying to encouraging SDSU to hold on down the stretch. The PA announcer said, “Thank you for attending and please travel home safely.”A “defense, defense” chant even went up with just more than three minutes to play. It fell on deaf ears. Creighton took the game to overtime and came away with a 72-69 victory over the Aztecs.
The second question at Arizona’s news conference centered on how being in the tournament helps the Wildcats players build their “brands.”
