Padres are in good shape. One glitch: Machado's 'hard contact' decline. He clutched his back after whiff two weeks ago.
Though their Big Four hitters and Big Three starting pitchers haven’t come close to enjoying a collective roll, they took a winning record into this week’s homestand, which began Monday night against the Reds.
Machado being Machado, he stayed on the field and maintained his excellent defense, but he’s not been hitting the ball hard as often. In hard contact, he’s down 7.2 percentage points from his career mark, 10.4 points from last year and 13.6 points from 2021. His rate still exceeds MLB’s average. So to an extent, he’s still the same hawk-eyed, crouching Soto — able to dictate a strike zone that’s surprisingly small for someone who stands 6-foot-2.
The 29-year-old is hitting the ball harder more often and on the sweet spot more often than in other years. Cronenworth’s adjusted OPS, enriched by a two-homer game April 15, stands three points above average.
