As the return of Padres manager Bob Melvin nears, possibly as early as Friday in San Francisco, how has fill-in Ryan Christenson done?. There has been no teeth-gnashing over handing the keys to a teenager who wants to bury the speedometer needle or burn tires at stoplights.

“Take the batter-pitchers for what they are, but it’s not the end-all, be-all. They help. They’re a piece of the decision, but it’s not the ultimate decision-maker.”
