Redemption tour for Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. begins with lovefest at FanFest
One man parked a leg on top of a table in front of Fernando Tatis Jr., Captain Morgan style, and asked him to autograph his thigh. A teen, too emotional and rattled to regulate his own volume, screamed “Fan after fan at a photo booth with the Padres’ jaw-dropper walked away without purses, phones and hundreds of dollars of newly purchased merchandise set to the side until a security officer reminded those stuck in a fan fog. For a moment, many forgot the photos themselves.
“Of course,” said Tatis, when asked if he’s nervous about the fan-reaction gantlet that awaits. “If I wouldn’t, I would be lying. It feels like it’s good emotions, like when you go on that first date.”“It’s going to be one of the most emotional years I feel like in my career,” he said. “I look to embrace it.”Petco Park represented the soft opening of a restaurant with family and friends. Put Tatis in front of tens of thousands. Test the prime rib. Adjust the drink pours. Stress the staff a bit.
Charlie Burton, 17, of Tierrasanta, gushed as he met Tatis for a photo Saturday. He said, “Nando’s my favorite guy. I’m still .” He admitted, though, that the suspension tested his fandom.
