Commemorating MLK’s 1966 Speech at SMU | Opinion

On the stage with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1966 were Bernard Lee, special assistant to King; Charles Cox, SMU student and chair of the academic committee; Bert Moore, vice president of the SMU Student Senate, and Sanford Coon, am SMU student who gave the invocation. SMU is unveiling a historical marker at McFarlin auditorium commemorating this lecture.

In 1966, King’s defense of nonviolence was important and increasingly challenging. The killing of Mississippi civil rights workers James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman in the 1964 alongside many racist acts of violence prompted growing impatience with this method in the spring of 1966. So on June 16, 1966, in Greenwood, Miss., Carmichael gave the inaugural “Black power” speech: “This is the 27th time I have been arrested. I ain’t going to jail no more. ... We want black power!” [Repeated back and forth between him and the crowd five times] “Every courthouse in Mississippi ought to be burned down to get rid of the dirt.

“And so this is what we try to do. We haven’t always been true to it, but we have tried. Some, out of anger, have strayed away. But by and large, we’ve stayed with it.
