Red McCombs, part of the Greatest Generation, served as a mentor.
Red McCombs is known for his business acumen and success, but to many in San Antonio, including the writer, he was a mentor.With the passing of Red McCombs, a bigger-than-life leader in business, philanthropy and civic causes, we have lost another remarkable individual who, like Edith McAllister and Tom Frost, contributed so much to improve the quality of life in our community.
There was also a robust personal dimension to his role in my life. When I was considering a career transition from corporate public relations, he strongly encouraged me to enter the development and fundraising profession. At the time, I didn’t really even know what development work was. I had the opportunity to be involved in the campaign to build the Alamodome and got to know McCombs during that time.
Like McAllister and Frost, he lived and exemplified all the uplifting attributes of the Greatest Generation. They all will be sorely missed, but by the many and diverse lives they touched, they will never be forgotten. I remember vividly when his daughter Marsha came to speak to Our Lady of the Lake University students — at the time, I was the university’s vice president for institutional advancement — she brought a pair of her father’s boots, commenting on the challenge of filling them.
