Since Trump’s capture of the Republican party, its national electoral performances have ranged from disappointing to dismal.
Former President Donald Trump stands at a campaign rally in Waco as footage of the insurrection played during the Star-Spangled Banner and pledge. David Romero writes that another defeat for Trump could revitalize American democracy. The evidence that former President Donald J. Trump posed a threat to our democracy is overwhelming. And, given that Trump is the front-runner candidate for the GOP’s presidential nomination in 2024, he remains a threat.
Trump is the only president to have been twice impeached. First, for attempting to extort a foreign leader for dirt on Joe Biden, his presumed opponent in the 2020 presidential election. Second, for his incendiary speech, which presumably sparked the seditious, violent interruption of the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 Electoral College victory, the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection.
In 2018, it lost the House. In 2020, it lost the presidency and the Senate. And, in 2022, it woefully underachieved at the midterms. The Trump effect, then, seems toxic for Republican Party electoral prospects. Finally, there is no reason to think Trump’s recent falsehood-laced antics, again on full display at last week’s town hall on CNN, and his legal difficulties will ultimately play out in his favor. Let’s not forget he kicked off his 2024 presidential election campaign with a rally in Waco by leading the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance back-dropped by scenes of the Jan. 6 insurrection. There is a good chance that by November 2024, Trump will be indicted on additional criminal charges.

Gov. Cooper needs just one Republican to help him save abortion rights in NCOne day after vetoing a 12-week abortion ban that North Carolina Republicans pushed through the legislature in less than three days, Gov. Roy Cooper speaks with Ali Velshi about the effort to save abortion rights in his state. Republicans have a supermajority in the North Carolina state legislature – but just barely. “All we need is one Republican to step up,” Gov. Cooper says, referring to the fact that he only needs one Republican member to vote against overriding his veto in order to protect North Carolinians’ reproductive rights and stop the “monstrous” abortion ban from taking effect. “Your zip code shouldn't determine your constitutional rights but that's where we are with the overturning of Roe v. Wade.”
