Central Pennsylvania residents, elected officials and members of the Jewish community came together at the Beth El Temple in Harrisburg Wednesday evening for a vigil and gathering of solidarity, standing with Israel as Hamas launches attacks on the country.
Three main Jewish prayers were shared during the vigil: Acheinu “Prayer for the Captive,” Mi Shebeirach “Prayer for Healing” and Hatikvah “The Hope.” Dganit Shefet, who grew up in Israel, shared personal accounts of hiding in bomb shelters while in third grade and other hardships during her youth.Pastor Earl Harris shared his unique perspective on the discrimination that both the Black and Jewish communities have faced throughout history.
Abby Smith, the board chair for the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, told the crowd coming together as a community despite the difficult times is what makes the Jewish people so resilient and strong.“We have traditions that really require us to be together. When we’re mourning, we are not supposed to mourn alone. We are supposed to come together. I think that our traditions, our practices are all designed on how to connect to one another.
