Community leaders urge interim sheriff to back state bill to prevent jail deaths [Breaking]
A day after yet another San Diego County jail inmate’s death was announced, community leaders on Tuesday met with Interim Sheriff Anthony Ray, calling on him to take action to prevent additional deaths in local jails.
State lawmakers introduced the bill in March, six weeks after the California State Auditor issued a scathing report that showed San Diego County recorded 185 jail deaths between 2006 and 2020 — the highest mortality rate among the state’s largest counties. — a 38-year-old inmate at the men’s Central Jail in downtown San Diego — which marked the seventh this year. It was unclear if such footage exists.
