We chat with Rosaline composers DrumandLace & ihultquist about crafting the perfect score for a cheeky retelling of Romeo and Juliet:
Warning: Minor SPOILERS for Rosaline.Rosaline, the upcoming retelling of William Shakespeare's iconic Romeo & Juliet, promises to put a comedic spin on a classic tale. Focusing not on the titular characters of the Shakespeare opus, but instead on Juliet's cousin - and Romeo's ex - Rosaline, the film looks poised to bring the perfect amount of levity and irreverence to the well-known story.
I know both of you are also performers as well as composers. After college, how did you find first get into working in film and TV? Ian Hultquist: Yeah, that's a good question. We read the script before we signed on, so we kind of knew that this was going to go in a different direction. I'll just say things aren't necessarily as tragic as the original source material in our version, so we knew that we didn't necessarily have to go to such a dark place. We wanted to do two things: We wanted it to be fresh, and exciting, and funny, but we also wanted to have a lot of emotion.
Ian Hultquist: I'm trying to remember if it was written into the screenplay or not. I think it may have been. But yeah, actually, the first thing we did before we actually started on the score was make these arrangements for some songs that play at a masquerade ball in the film. I think the first two we did were "Dancing on My Own" by Robyn and "Escape" by Enrique Iglesias. There were a few more that happened down the road, but it was funny.
But then, when it came to recording sessions, we did request the contractor to find musicians that have familiarity with that kind of music. We also had an amazing session with these three woodwind players who brought a whole plethora of Baroque flutes of all different shapes and sizes. That was amazing to see, and I think throughout the film we kept having them change the configuration of different blends, different flutes, to really kind of mix it up and make it feel interesting.
