IN AUGUST this year, Carvel Bennett, from Erdington in Birmingham, was found guilty of the historical rape of a 13-year-old babysitter during the 1970s.
During the landmark case, Bennett had tried to deny paternity but the DNA evidence provided by his daughter helped convict him of the crime he committed more than 40 years ago.The court heard, the findings from the DNA results showed the defendant was 22 million times more likely to be her father than any other unknown African-Caribbean man unrelated to him.
When the baby was just a few days old, she was placed in foster care and was later adopted when she was seven months. Daisy was transracially adopted into an all-white family and lived in a predominantly white town. She didn’t have any other Black children in her class until she was 13., during the 1970s there was no formal training given to white adopters on how to meet the needs of Black children and this made things extremely difficult for her.She said: “I was very aware of my difference, I looked very different and I was stared at a lot.
She said: “The first priority should have been to protect her, she was a child, she needed safeguarding and support, but she wasn’t given any. They failed her and I think her race and class had a lot to do with it.” The fact Daisy wasn’t classified as a victim under UK law and her birth mother had to come forward in order for the police to press charges, motivated Daisy to campaign to change the law, so that children conceived by rape are given ‘victim’ status and classified as victims.
Fewer than one in six reported the assault to the police. The data showed that of those who told someone other than the police, 40% stated embarrassment as the reason, 38% did not think the police could help, and 34% thought it the process would be humiliating.
