A screening of Avatar: The Way of Water disappointed an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan in a hilarious new TikTok. Both franchises are completely different and indeed use the word "avatar" to two different ends, but it has led to no end of confusion for fans. In the animated Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the avatar refers to a deity given corporeal form, namely the only person on the planet who has the power to manipulate to "bend" all four elements.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY On TikTok, user rubat0sis recently shared a video highlighting how confusing the dueling Avatar franchises can be. In the video, a person who the hashtags imply to be the user's husband has arrived at the movie theater wearing an Avatar: The Last Airbender sweatshirt.
As if to lean in on this fact, the belated James Cameron sequel, which was released in theaters on December 16, 2022, was subtitled Avatar: The Way of Water. This increases the confusion, as Avatar: The Last Airbender features people who can bend the elements air, fire, earth, or water.
These mix-ups will only get worse as both franchises continue. Netflix is currently in production on a live-action series adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which will likely come out sometime this year. Avatar: The Way of Water will also be getting a sequel in December 2024, meaning that the franchises will be hopscotching releases, likely to the consternation of confused viewers.
