Conservative education activists are accusing the Republican-controlled State Board of Education of helping liberals smuggle bits of Critical Race Theory into social studies standards that were expected to be up for an initial vote next week.

Many throughout the broad network of the Texas Republican party are registering concern at the direction of the social studies standards, said Brendan Steinhauser, a longtime Austin Republican strategistone of many similar such groups across the state that have pushed conservative control of local school boards by running and funding candidates on partisan platforms aimed at scrubbing out Critical Race Theory, LGBT books and other materials they believe contain liberal themes off campuses.

Texas lawmakers also responded, passing a law banning the teaching of Critical Race Theory in schools over the complaints of teacher groups and education experts. This summer, Gov. Greg Abbott followed up with a “Parental Bill of Rights” suite of legislation that would give parents more power over content in their children’s classroom. Billboards touting the “Parent Choice” package have cropped up across Texas.

If the board ditches the proposed restructure of the social studies curriculum and returns to an earlier draft with some changes, that would solve a lot of problems, she said. She’s looking for standards that offer “less leading questions” to students and is “less critical of the United States.” She noted that the 2023 board will likely have the same number of Republicans as the current board, and one outgoing Republican member — Matt Robinson of Friendswood — supports her in her efforts.“Pat has never been a good vote counter,” Robinson wrote in a text message responding directly to her assertion.

“I would like to keep 4th and 7th grade Texas History taught as it is now. But if that means delaying first reading until January? No, I’m not in favor of that,” Robinson said. “I won’t be doing anything if it makes me out to be helping Pickren’s far-right agenda.”
