Acclaimed war photographer Lynsey Addario speaks to V.F. about documenting global conflicts and humanitarian crises: “I do this because I believe fundamentally in the importance of journalism.”
began her professional career by diving in headfirst. In 1996, with no prior training, but plenty of passion and curiosity, she began working for thea storied English-language newspaper in Argentina. Four years later, she trekked to Afghanistan, where she chronicled the lives of women living under Taliban oppression, producing a stunning body of images that she is perhaps still most recognized for.
“I’ve worked as a photojournalist for almost 25 years, and am constantly in motion, from country to country, story to story, documenting these very intense and historical moments,” Addario wrote in an email. “I do this because I believe fundamentally in the importance of journalism, of helping inform the world through fact, through reporting and photography and storytelling, and by connecting people.
