AUSTIN – Rodney Terry was still trying to grasp the new reality not long after Texas held off Rice for a dramatic overtime win at the Moody Center back on Dec. 12. Though Terry was a basketball lifer who’d spent more than half his years in coaching, this sort of maelstrom was unlike any he’d ever experienced.
“Get used to being in that chair for the rest of this season,” Barnes told Terry. “And really, at the end of the day, you’ve gotta approach this opportunity like you’re going to be there the next 20 years.” This week, Terry agreed to a five-year, $15.3 million deal to become Texas’ full-time head coach after going 22-8 and reaching the Elite Eight in the interim role following the dismissal of Beard. Now, he’ll get to work figuring out what next season’s roster will look like.
Four key veterans extinguished their collegiate eligibility this season: super senior forwards Timmy Allen and Christian Bishop, and graduate guards Marcus Carr and Sir’Jabari Rice. That quartet averaged a combined 46 points, 15.8 rebounds, 10.5 assists and 4.2 steals per game. But Hunter on Friday announced he will enter his name in the 2023 NBA draft pool while retain his collegiate eligibility. The 2022 Big 12 freshman of the year excelled down the stretch for Texas, both as an on-ball defender and play-making threat. With another year of seasoning, the 6-foot guard could become the focal point for Texas playing alongside the high-upside Morris and Brumbaugh, a four-star freshman who redshirted this year due to the team’s backcourt depth.
