A convicted felon who law enforcement officials say had a loaded handgun as well as heroin, cocaine, mushrooms, ecstasy and cannabis in his vehicle was arrested in Naperville this week on weapon charges.
Darron Prince, 36, of the 500 block of Meadow Lily Drive, Joliet, was taken into custody Monday night, about an hour after a police officer on foot patrol at TopGolf on Odyssey Court noticed a strong odor of cannabis coming from an unoccupied Volkswagen SUV and spotted a gun protruding from the driver’s side door frame, a joint DuPage County State’s Attorney Office/Naperville Police Department news release said. While searching the vehicle, police found a Glock handgun, 40 grams of cannabis, 1.
Bond was denied for Prince, who is awaiting trial on felony theft and armed habitual criminal cases in Will County. His previous felony convictions include unlawful use of a weapon by a gang member and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, the release said.DuPage charges against Prince stemming from the Monday incident are armed habitual criminal and armed violence, both of which are a class X felonies.
“With multiple felony convictions, there is absolutely no justification whatsoever why Mr. Prince was in possession of a loaded firearm, as alleged in this case,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “The allegations that he was in possession of a loaded weapon at a family-friendly recreation facility are extremely troubling and if found guilty of today’s charges, he will find himself facing a significant amount of time behind bars.”
