Leeds United defender Liam Cooper was an unused substitute in Scotland's controversial defeat in Spain but Steve Clarke's side have now had their place at Euro 2024 confirmed
Liam Cooper will be celebrating alongside his international team-mates as Scotland's place at Euro 2024 was confirmed without the team kicking a ball. The Leeds United defender was an unused substitute as Steve Clarke's side fell to a controversial defeat in Spain on Thursday, with Scott McTominay seeing an opening goal chalked off after a VAR review in the 2-0 defeat.
However, Spain's narrow victory in Norway three days' later now means both countries have booked their place at the tournament next summer. Gavi scored the only goal of the game on Sundayand while Scotland now trail Spain on goal difference, Norway can no longer overhaul either nation in Group A with just one match remaining.
Speaking after qualification was confirmed, Clarke told reporters: “I would like to congratulate the players for their efforts in qualifying for back-to-back tournaments I’m not sure they will fully realise the significance of their achievement yet but to qualify for successive Euros after more than 20 years is phenomenal and testament to their hard work.
Ampadu and Rodon both started for Wales, with Mario Pasalic's 75th-minute strike setting the scene for a nervy finish at the Cardiff City Stadium. James was introduced from the bench in the 57th minute in place of David Brooks.
