Sean Wilson, who has portrayed Martin Platt in Coronation Street since 1985, has abruptly quit the show
Coronation Street has had to rework Helen Worth's exit scenes following the unexpected departure of Sean Wilson, who plays Martin Platt. Sean, a member of the soap since 1985, was due to return later this year for Gail Platt's final episodes over the festive period.
"Sean was enjoying his time on the show, and he was well-liked on set. He had filmed scenes with many of the cast, but then suddenly he was called into head office, and later word spread that he wouldn't be returning or his scenes airing, but no explanation was given." It was initially a heartbreak scenario for schoolgirl Jenny when Martin spurned her affections. However, he eventually consented to go out with her.
In 1989 Martin started a romance with Gail Tilsley, seeking solace in his arms following the murder of her husband Brian. Gail conceived the next year, pondering an abortion before opting to keep the child at the eleventh hour.
