The actor has stared in Coronation Street since the 1990s
David Neilson has become one of Coronation Steet's most recognised and loved faces. After first taking to our screens in the ITV show in 1997, he's become a permanent fixture in the storyline and has certainly become one of the nation's favourite soap stars.
First appearing on screens as Roy in 1995, the part was only a small role at first, with Roy meant to be a Norman Bates-esque “creep” according to David. However, he fleshed out the character across his initial six episodes, proving popular with both viewers and Corrie’s executive producers. Jane may not be known to Corrie fans, but she played a big part in shaping the Roy millions love to this day. She put forward the suggestion that Roy had Asperger’s, leading to his social awkwardness - a facet David has portrayed in the character ever since.
It’s a diagnosis that’s never been explicitly said on screen, but David doesn’t believe it needs to be. He said: “It's never mentioned in the story though, and it shouldn't be - Roy is a human being, and a label doesn't help him. David was initially handed a generic carrier bag for the role, but made sure Phyllis’ bag came on screen in what is a fitting - and practical - tribute. He said: “Initially they gave me a carrier bag. But you see guys standing at bus stops with bags like that and I thought I’d introduce it. It’s also very handy to carry my scripts round in.”
